Here are some basic facts of Rice,that is undoubtedly one of the most important staple cerealgrain food of most of the people of Asia,Latin America,West indies and the Middle east.Rice is the seed of the annual monocot plant.it is the second most highly produced grain in the world .
There are many varieties of rice-the main distinction being the long grained rice and the short grain variety.Due to the rise in temperatures and other environmental factors the production of rice has decreased in many parts of Asia.
I had always wondered how this seed of an annual monocot plant came to be called RICE and after looking around for some time found the answer to my query.The word Rice was finally decided in english in the 13th century was derived from the french word Ris that comes from the italian Riso which comes from latin Oriza derived from the greek and finally( this should not be a surprise to us...but is) from the sanskrit word- Vrihi-s.
